On Tuesday, June 13 at 7pm, join us at the Cherokee County History Center for a lecture on "The Preservation of Native American History and Heritage" with Leslie Thomas. 

Bio

Leslie Barker Thomas has been a long-time member (over 20 years) of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association, serving as the newsletter editor, communications director and as the Vice President for twelve years, President of the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association 2014-2017, reelected to serve 2022-2024.  Was appointed as Preservation Research Coordinator 2022 by the National TOTA out of Oklahoma.  She has been the Georgia Chapter of the Trail of Tears Historical Preservation Officer since 2017. She serves on the board of directors for the National Trail of Tears Association which involves nine states.


Retired from the medical field, after 25 years working with people and another 5 years with animals, retirement allows her to pursue her love of historical research and writing.  She writes for the local Times Courier Newspaper and Appalachian Country Living Magazine.   
She is the current President of the Gilmer County Historical Society and operates the local heritage museum, former member of the board of directors for Chieftains Museum in Rome, former board member for the Gilmer County Genealogy Society, former board member for the Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association, and former newsletter editor for her local church. 


Born in Chicago moved a good deal with her military parents to include overseas and 14 states.  Her late husband Roddy Thomas retired from the US Army as Staff Sergeant and the US Postal Service as a Postal Inspector and Supervisor was born in Alpharetta. They have five children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  Currently residing in Murray County's foothills of Fort Mountain, in the city of Chatsworth.
